The XC40 may arriver lately, but it immediately established its place on the market. Regardless of the recent launch, experts already think about this model one of the greatest subcompact crossovers around. It stands out for several reasons, but mostly for a lavish cabin, lots of standard equipment, easy ride, and efficient engines. This is the smallest crossover at the lineup of the famous Swedish maker, but it retains the speed with larger models in many aspects.
Therefore, we are fairly certain that there won’t be bigger changes to the 2020 Volvo XC40, which will signify the next generation year of the current, first generation. This model will continue with the same characteristics and features, even though it will not be surprised to find a couple of novelties regarding new standard equipment or new exterior colors. Still, the general design will surely stay the same. Therefore, depending on the average arrival date, sometime late in the year. Regarding base design characteristics, the 2020 Volvo XC40 will continue in the same way.
2020 Volvo XC40 Changes and Design
This model has been introduced recently and represents the Swedish manufacturer from the segment of subcompact crossovers. But, it also borrows many design solutions from its larger siblings, especially from the XC60. When it has to do with the styling, it features a more normal Volvo layout. The design language is shared with other crossovers from the lineup, which was practically introduced with the flagship XC90 and slightly modernized with younger XC60. Of course, the XC40 continued with further improvement of aesthetics so that you can notice a couple of distinctive details on it. The overall shape is typical SUVish.
This crossover keeps the roofline pretty directly, which brings benefits regarding cargo volume and general practicality. Given the fact that we are speaking about a very fresh model, we do not count on any important shift. Anything more than a couple of new color choices will be a surprise. This is possibly the strongest point of this little crossover. The 2020 Volvo XC40 put some standards for the segment. Presently, we aren’t certain that any other subcompact crossover can match its cottage quality. It comes not only with lots of hi-end stuff but also with excellent styling solutions, directly inspired by bigger siblings.
Interior Design and Features
The cabin feels fairly open-air and leaves an impression of a more spacious cabin than is. That doesn’t mean that the cabin is tight. It is pretty broad, though the second row is normal for the segment and will not be so comfortable for taller passengers. On the other side, front chairs are massive and supportive, perfect for extended journeys. The weak point of this cabin is cargo quantity. Despite fairly horizontal roofline, the cargo area features below-average volume, largely as a result of a short rear overhang. You can count on around 47 cubic feet of total cargo space.
We do not expect to see many changes into the next year, though a few of novelties appear possible. The current base model comes with goodies like a 9-inch touchscreen, eight-speaker audio system, satellite radio, two USB interfaces, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and couple more items. In higher trims, it is also possible to get items like a panoramic sunroof, navigation, a cooled glove box, a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, wireless charging etc.
Commonly for Volvo, the list of standard security features is very long. Base models are equipped with things like rearview camera, traffic sign recognition, lane maintain assist, oncoming lane mitigation, road departure reduction, driver drowsiness monitoring, rear collision warning. Of course, there is a lot of optional features as well. Some of them are adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, active bending headlights, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors and much more.
2020 Volvo XC40 Engine
We do not expect to see larger changes under the hood for the next year either. The current model includes two engines in the offer and the 2020 Volvo XC40 should remain in the same way. That would mean that the base model will be equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine which is excellent for about 187 horsepower.
The same engine comes in a tuned version that delivers around 250 horsepower. In both cases, you can count on pretty excellent fuel economy. The base engine is particularly useful in this aspect. It yields about 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. These are a few of the best results from the class.
Release Date and Price
Considering that there are not any bigger changes to come, the 2020 Volvo XC40 should appear late in the year. The price will stay the same, which means around 34.000 dollars for the base model.
